[ What was a dignified expression just a while ago turns into a frustrated one, like that of a sulking kid. ]

No, I take it back! What kind of game even is this, senpai?! My attacks barely connected and the ones that did, you just ended up blocking anyway. So how is my stamina being drained if my attacks didn't even land?! In the first place, shouldn't all the characters be equal in terms of their movesets? Am I supposed to magically reach someone who attacks from afar with my limited-ranged character? Isn't that unfair?!

And moreover! Whose idea was it to make the combos so complicated in the first place! I've tried to memorize as much as I can from the Combo List, but how am I supposed to remember all of them in the heat of the battle? I've been practicing before you even came in for two hours already and I just cannot understand why these mechanics–

[ Mid-rant, he pulls out a candy bar from his pocket (he was saving it for after dinner but desperate times call for desperate measures!) and starts angrily eating it. The next words just come out as incoherent rambling as he tries to continue talking while chewing. The stress eating has commenced. ]

why is the chibi icon so funny, jun just innocently watching this breakdown happen

[ If you're being talked to calmly, it becomes almost impossible to remain angry. So Tsukasa's aggressive munching eventually tones down to a more subdued one as he listens to his senior talk. When he swallows the last of the candy, he frowns for a moment as he first gathers his thoughts. Then, in a small voice: ]

It's not... just about the game.

[ Admittedly it feels out of the blue to be opening this up, but he supposes he owes it to his senior to at least attempt to explain where he's coming from. Still, he keeps his gaze on his lap, unable to look at Jun directly. In the meantime, he occupies his hands by smoothing out the leftover candy bar wrapper and folding it as he speaks. ]

Everyone in my class has been really into this game recently. It was Harukawa-kun who introduced it, then it seems Yuta-kun and Shinobu-kun have also been playing it. And as much as it vexes me to say it, apparently even Tori-kun had gotten decent in it as well. They would always have conversations about it during breaks, talking about strategies or new techniques to try out. Admittedly, I do not understand the appeal of it. Isn't a game with a riveting storyline better than something like this? So I thought I could just ignore it and let them be.

But everyone seems to be having so much fun, so I just...

I just wanted to...

[ His cheeks turn pink as he struggles with his sentence, too embarrassed to voice out what he truly wanted to say. Being an only child and having grown up in such a strict household, socialization had always been quite the enigma. Perhaps it was even more apt to say people befriended him rather than him making friends on his own. Yet it doesn't mean he didn't want to try to reach out on his own from time to time. Not that it's been easy, given his own awkwardness.

But he understands what Jun is saying, and truly it dawns on him how immature he must've looked throwing a tantrum like that over a game. Tsukasa shakes his head a bit, then gives Jun a wry smile. He'd also managed to fold his candy bar's wrapper to a much smaller form by now, so he'll just pocket that to properly throw in the trash later. ]

...Thank you for the explanation, Sazanami-senpai. And I apologize as well for showing such an unsightly behavior. I haven't really played much video games growing up, much less this genre, so perhaps it is only my ignorance who's to blame here.

But shouldn't one put effort in getting along with their peers? I am well aware that I don't have the same friendly personality the likes of which Yuta-kun or Harukawa-kun can employ so naturally. That's why I thought learning about something that they enjoy and being able to play it with them would be my own way of conveying that I value our friendship... Is that not how it goes?

And yet if I am terrible at the game, I'm afraid they would just find my company bothersome. I also... do not wish to embarrass myself in front of my friends.

[ He'll call it his 'pride as a knight' or something equally grand, but really it's just a normal teenager's fear of being rejected by his peers. At the mention of RPGs though, he does smile a bit. ]

It is true that I do like those kind of games much better. I enjoy reading already, so they almost feel like an extension of that. But that's not really something you play with others, is it?

[ Jun's words bring a sense of comfort at least, and Tsukasa does find himself wishing things were that easy. That he can just choose not to worry. But the thought of potentially alienating himself from his friends if he doesn't do things like this does continue to nag at him. ]

And is that so? You seem to know quite a lot, so I assumed you had been playing them for long. Were you also not allowed to play them because you had to focus on your studies?

[ That's how it is for him, at least. Also, he'll huff his cheeks just a bit at being nudged at. It's nothing bad at all, just that he feels like he's being treated like a kid and he can't help but further be embarrassed about it. ]

Normally I would be happy at being told I carry a noble aura but I presume that it doesn't work in my favor in this context...

[ An embarrassed laugh. Nothing he's particularly offended about, truly. This is par for the course of being a Suou. And while he'd normally take great pride in it, it does feel sad that it creates a barrier of sorts sometimes, especially with friends.

That aside, the word 'newbie' specifically catches his attention, being reminiscent of his earlier days in Knights. Of course being an idol and playing video games are by no means of equal weight. But if Tsukasa was able to work through his own inexperience to become a competent idol, surely he should know better than folding at the mere suggestion of a roadblock. ]

But I understand. Perhaps I am so caught up with wanting to impress my friends that I forget nothing is achieved without putting effort into it. Speaking this way does a disservice to the kindness of my friends as well. In fact, if I only approached them with more honesty, perhaps I wouldn't have made myself this frustrated...

[ Hence he feels lucky he has Jun to listen to him in this regard. To at least get him out of the hole he's inadvertently digging himself in out of stubborness. For now, as if visibly lightened by the conversation, the furrow of his brows relax and he's able to smile with excitement again. ]

Ah, most gacha games nowadays do offer the opportunity to play with friends, don't they? Perhaps that is a good alternative! Although I do not wish to worry my parents about my game spending again...

[ Help he has the money to actually whale hard, don't get him back into this rabbit hole, Jun...

As for the brief look at Jun's childhood, Tsukasa has to admit it's a bit perplexing. Discarding anything that didn't have anything to do with idols... does that mean his senior came from a family steeped in the idol industry? He won't say he's particularly well-versed in idol history to know, but perhaps he'll look up the name 'Sazanami' later. ]

I see. Sazanami-senpai's parents must've been very dedicated to ensuring you become an idol. I imagine it wasn't an easy path. But as you have said earlier, I am glad we now have the opportunity to make up for the lost time! And surely I shouldn't be wasting such a time sulking about a lost video game match.

[ That's why! He picks up the controller again and, with eyes positively sparkling: ]

Shall we have another match, senpai? This time, I only wish to play for fun!
crownandfaith: (pic#16875320)

imagine walking into the common room and 2 guys are working thru their issues via video games

[personal profile] crownandfaith 2024-02-14 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Pause. Was he just called 'friend'? They're friends now? Huh. Huh.

For Tsukasa, roles had always had clear delineations. So while he respects Jun as a senior, he'd never thought it was the sort of relationship that included friendship within it. But now that he thinks about it, they're playing a video game and he's telling said senior things he'd probably hesitate to even tell people he already considers friends. What is that if not an admission of trust, of friendship?

So if he smiles even brighter now, please don't pay too much attention to it! Really, it feels a bit embarrassing to look this happy! He's just pleased to have widened his circle again. Maybe he's not too hopeless on the 'making friends' department after all.

Just... a bit confused by all the gamespeak that follows, however. Meta? Spark? Ahaha, Sazanami-senpai sure knows a lot about this kind of thing. I'm not sure I can keep up... ]

Hmm. In particular, I mostly just bought gear and various special items for my characters to boost their performance in-game. Apparently one is able to obtain those through farming anyway, but the drop rates can be unforgiving and quite honestly I do not wish to go through that when an easier option exists. [ #whaleprivilege please don't perceive him. Anyway, he's much more occupied with leader duties now so perhaps with it comes the maturity to not do that anymore.

And ah, it seems he's hit a sore spot.

That 'Goddamn' and the rant that briefly followed certainly doesn't encourage deeper probing. He can glean that much. Somehow, Jun's words from earlier feels much heavier now: "I'm guessing our circumstances are pretty different." Maybe it is in ways Tsukasa can't even begin to comprehend.

Fortunately, his offer for another match makes it easy to gloss over the topic. He won't even point out the crude language. For now, he just makes a mental note about the topic being sensitive; he'd hate to further upset his friend, after all.

And this time, Tsukasa chooses a character almost the opposite to his previous one: a small, elf-like summoner! So cute, so harmless-looking. ]

This character reminds me of Tori-kun, so I won't feel too bad even if I lost ♪

[ He chuckles darkly to himself like some B-rated movie villain. Why is he like this. Maybe this is his idea of fun. ]
crownandfaith: (pic#17041781)

that's just this entire franchise in general really

[personal profile] crownandfaith 2024-03-01 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[ 'it's hard to find time as idols, too' FOR REAL, especially for someone who's juggling idol work and attending to his family duties. He'll nod enthusiastically in sympathy. ]

Right, right? Although I understand there is a sense of fulfillment to be had through grinding, so I don't fault people who put time into it. To be honest, I do feel just a bit jealous sometimes when I hear someone who, despite all the odds, managed to get the item I merely took the easy way to obtain.

[ The grass is always greener on the other side and all that. Also, that concern for Tori will be met with a small chuckle. ]

I don't mind even if Tori-kun hears it. I'm not scared of him, you know?

[ No one said anything?? Anyway, Round 2 start! He doesn't really attack for now; instead, he seems to be practicing the timing of his dodges. He's doing decent, bar a few stray hits he's taken when his timing is off. ]

Hmm. Perfectly dodging incoming attacks is necessary to maintain survivability, but then it only prolongs the battle which the timer discourages. Perhaps in these sort of games, taking the offensive truly is the best way to secure vict–

[ Oops, he's doing it again. ]

–ah, my apologies. I'm thinking too much about winning again, aren't I? To have fun is let things take its course, or at least that is what I'm aiming at for now.

[ But enough dodging Jun's attacks; it's his turn to counter! Though he's not really sure what this character does, really, since he mostly just chose it to poke fun at Tori. He presses the attack button and it prompts his character to throw some scroll to the air and... poof! out of it comes a reptile-like monster. That gets a laugh out of Tsukasa. ]

What's with this character? I suppose he's much too small to face off the enemy by himself, so he has to rely on a summoned ally? Fufu, I guess your incomprehensible fighting bear has met its match, senpai.
