[ Given all the gaming equipment available in Seisoukan's common room, it has become quite a popular spot for people to gather and unwind. It wouldn't have been out of place seeing the likes of Makoto, Sora, or the Aoi twins hold gaming marathons here every now and then.
This time however, instead of the usual suspects, there's one Suou Tsukasa playing a game on his own.
Since there isn't anyone else around, he has his feet up on the couch, knees tucked to his chest as he mashes away on a controller. On the screen is an ongoing match in a fighting game – one seemingly close to its end, if Player 1's red HP bar is anything to go by. Indeed, in just a few more seconds, the match draws to its inevitable close. A frustrated sigh soon follows. ]
...I wonder if the game copy I bought is defective? Or could this controller be the one at fault?
[ Because obviously it has to be one or the other, why else would he keep losing! As he's turning over his controller to inspect it, he spots another figure enter the room. His annoyed expression softens into a polite smile. ]
Good afternoon, Sazanami-senpai. [ He also quickly puts his feet down from the couch. He'd rather not be seen sitting in such a slovenly manner, let alone by a senior. ] Ah! If you are not occupied at the moment, would you indulge me in a game or two? I could use a challenge!
[ He says this like there isn't a blaring YOU LOSE displayed on the screen right now. Belatedly, he'll press a button and now it's back to the character selection screen. You saw nothing. ]
[ After taking Mary for a leisurely stroll around the neighbourhood, accompanying them were Koga and Leon, who were also avid outdoor enthusiasts. Although Mary and Leon had become close friends, while they strolled, Jun noticed Mary appeared a little more restless than usual, so he decided it would be best to end their walk. And to ensure Mary would remain warm, the pair headed back to the Seisoukan, parting ways with their furry friends.
As Jun steps into the dorms, he immediately makes his way to escort Mary back upstairs. After a quick trip, he descends again, curious to see if there's any activity in the common room. To his surprise, he encounters two unexpected sights: firstly, the common room appeared unusually vacant, and secondly, Tsukasa sat there, visibly frustrated, gripping a controller while engrossed in a video game.
Before he could even utter a word of greeting to Tsukasa, he quickly tried to stifle a laugh, noticing the screen displaying the dreaded "YOU LOSE" message, but his junior hastily pressed the back button. Well, Jun has experienced his fair share of defeats! He often loses to Sora, but he takes it in stride. In other words, he can relate to Tsukasa's reaction. ]
He~y, Suou-kun! Was about to ask whatcha doing 'cause you've been holding the controller pretty tightly. [ Tsukasa's sitting posture doesn't faze him, but his lightning-fast movements never fail to entertain. ] Yeah, I'd be happy to join you for a game or two. Not really doing anything else, just came down to see if anyone's about after Mary's walk.
[ Now, has Tsukasa scared everyone off? That's the question. ]
You gotta hold it a little less... [ Is there any reason for him not to acknowledge the way Tsukasa has been holding the controller? Absolutely not! ] Uh, first, why were you holdin' the controller upside down?
Edited (gives you a million edit notifs) 2024-01-28 06:08 (UTC)
Eh? [ A confused look, before he remembers the controller in hand. He'll hold it the right way now; see, he knows this much! ] Oh, I was just checking if it's working properly. It was giving me some trouble a while ago...
[ 'Imagined trouble' might be more apt. He'll shrug that off for now though and hands Jun the other controller. He moves over to the side as well, freeing up enough space to take the seat beside him. ]
And I hope Mary-san had a pleasant walk. It's been a while since I've last seen her, but I am certain she is as adorable as always! ♪
[ The memory of taking a photo of her back when he'd bumped into Nagisa and Ibara babysitting her brings a smile to his face. He'll definitely take another one (and maybe actually pet her this time), if opportunity permits it!
But back to the game. The roster available are the typical game tropes; there's your karate master, ninja, mage, and even the incomprehensible ones like an actual bear who is somehow adept to fighting?? Fun stuff. Anyway, Tsukasa chooses the game's closest approximate to a knight – some armor-wearing, sword-wielding character – because of course he does. ]
[ With a suppressed chuckle, he discreetly coughs to compose himself as the explanation unfolds. Now it all makes sense! Jun, though still harbouring some doubts, decides to let it go. ]
Yeah, Mary's walk went pretty well! The weather's been a bit chilly lately, so she doesn't do too well in it. She's the most adorable~! ♪ And I'm sure Ohii-san'll let you if you ever wanna! He's always real proud about showing her off.
[ As is Jun; she's Eve's precious daughter, after all! It warms his heart to know she's left such a lasting impression on Tsukasa, despite her timid nature. It's wonderful to see Mary flourishing and building new friendships with both animals and humans alike.
But back to the game! Jun takes the controller, eyeing the roster available to them. He's played this one numerous times, mostly with ASOBI Club, but that doesn't mean he'll go easy on Tsukasa. And for now, Jun decides on the mage, scrolling past the options as if he's contemplating another choice.
The armour-wielding character seems to be the most obvious choice, he notes, but it's all for fun and games. There won't be any competition involved today, not even a tiny bit. ]
That's a good choice! Probably the closest thing to a real knight anyway, but the bear makes for an interesting option. Right~?
[ He's teasing a little, and finally presses the select button on the mage. ]
[ He'll preen just a bit at his character choice being praised. ]
Fufu, I did chose this character because I feel a strong connection with him! I have a hunch that he shall lead me to victory. I am not sure I'd call the bear an interesting choice, however. Truly I do not understand the logic behind a bear knowing human martial arts...
[ Yes, because fighting games are famously known for their logic. Anyway, with a nod signaling he's ready, the match is on!
Given its sword, Tsukasa's character at least has some reach. But it's still nothing compared a mage's long-rage attack. Moreover, it seems zero dodging skills are being employed here so he's taking any of Jun's attacks squarely. Not too long, his brows furrow again, frowning intently at the screen. ]
Ugh... Senpai, stop blocking my attacks...!
[ RIP to this controller, he's pressing buttons like his life depends on it. ]
[ As for the bear knowing martial arts—we don't question the logic, given that this is a video game!—anyway, this is a great day for Jun to learn a lot about his junior.
There's a certain smugness to Jun's style of play—at least he doesn't seem to be losing this time! As he turns to face him, he smirks, listening to the button mashing with a shake of his head. But now, he's avoiding depleting his character's stamina by pressing the button every time one of Tsukasa's attacks attempts to land.
Well, it's normal to grow frustrated when someone keeps trying to block an attack; you can't win that way! However, for Jun, it's a positive thing, as he fires another ranged assault in the direction of the opposing character. ]
You know there's a dodge button, yeah?
[ Rip controller, we hardly knew you. ]
why is this match just hydrogen bomb vs. coughing baby i'm crying
[ Curt and almost annoyed, a tone he definitely wouldn't have used toward a senior on any normal scenario. But it's a reflection of how wound up the game is making him feel at the moment. Hopefully Jun won't take it against him.
Besides, he does know. He even read the Combo List section for this character a while ago! But knowing something and putting it to use at the right timing are two different things. Adapting quickly to the unexpected isn't really one of Tsukasa's strongest suits. And right now, being overwhelmed is making him panic and mess up his button inputs.
When Jun fires his attack, Tsukasa actually remembers to press the dodge button this time. By some sheer luck, the timing aligns perfectly; his character does a fancy sidestep and Jun's attack phases through. His face immediately brightens. ]
—ah! I did it!
[ Not that it's saved him much. His HP bar is already approaching red by now but hey, small victories. ]
i'm crying... i looked it up before work and it was all i could think abt
[ Jun is completely unfazed by the tone; he's accustomed to it, and he even employs it himself when it comes to games. It's all in good spirits, but he never meant to belittle Tsukasa's lack of knowledge or anything like that.
It's only natural, right? Games can get pretty intense, especially when winning is the goal! And mastering the button combinations in a fighting game is far from a walk in the park, especially with knowing the timing.
Now that's out of the way, Jun finds himself both impressed and astonished by Tsukasa's ability to evade his attack. He hadn't anticipated this to be a major learning curve by any means, but Tsukasa's catching on a lot sooner than Jun thought. ]
Shit—
[ He leans back into the couch, eyes trained on both their characters. ]
Wait, that was pretty impressive! See? You're gettin' the hang of it.
[ However, it won't be for much longer, as he's already preparing to unleash yet another barrage of assaults towards Tsukasa's character. The mage's energy is gradually diminishing, even while Jun's strategically reserving this round of attacks for their ultimate move, ensuring that Tsukasa remains unaware of his plan. But it's far too obvious due to the mage's glowing aura. ]
i apologize for giving u silly thoughts while at work u_u

Um. What's happening...?
[ If he was a bit more savvy in this game, he wouldn't have wasted any precious time even asking this question. And when he finally realizes the move for what it was, he lets out a panicked sound and almost rises from his seat. Gripping his controller tightly, Tsukasa makes his character dash forward, sword swinging at its opponent to disrupt the ultimate move's charge-up sequence.
A valiant attempt, really. Unfortunately, it's half-a-second too late. ]
P-Please wait a moment! Don't fire it yet!

it helped me get through work thinking about the clowning!!! so thank you
[ Ah–! The look that Tsukasa gives Jun definitely encourages him to refrain from using that kind of language around his juniors. Oh well, staying with goddamn should be the safer option.
But besides that, he can't stop firing the ultimate now. Not even when his junior poses his question, causing a sudden uneasiness. Perhaps if Tsukasa had been a second sooner, his attempts at interrupting wouldn't have been in vain. Still, the actions impress Jun where he's making an attempt to stop the move from establishing contact, alongside being so immersed in the game, too.

[ With a flashy sequence, Tsukasa watches as his character is completely knocked out and its HP bar diminished to none. A short music cue plays signaling the end of the round. The game also appropriately tags their characters' names with a LOSE and WIN right under them, as if further hammering the point.
He sinks back to the couch then, his shoulders slumped. After a beat, however, he gives Jun his usual polite smile. ]
Ahaha... there is no need for an apology. I did know that such an ability exists but I wasn't familiar with the visual cue for it, so I made an incorrect judgment near the end. Well, one can never truly predict things completely when it comes to these type of games, I suppose. I am happy you think I did adequately, however!
[ –is how he thinks the proper way to react to all this should be. Accept loss with the grace of a gentleman. Take it in stride like a cool, mature adult. That's totally the kind of image he wanted to portray, after all.

No, I take it back! What kind of game even is this, senpai?! My attacks barely connected and the ones that did, you just ended up blocking anyway. So how is my stamina being drained if my attacks didn't even land?! In the first place, shouldn't all the characters be equal in terms of their movesets? Am I supposed to magically reach someone who attacks from afar with my limited-ranged character? Isn't that unfair?!
And moreover! Whose idea was it to make the combos so complicated in the first place! I've tried to memorize as much as I can from the Combo List, but how am I supposed to remember all of them in the heat of the battle? I've been practicing before you even came in for two hours already and I just cannot understand why these mechanics–
[ Mid-rant, he pulls out a candy bar from his pocket (he was saving it for after dinner but desperate times call for desperate measures!) and starts angrily eating it. The next words just come out as incoherent rambling as he tries to continue talking while chewing. The stress eating has commenced. ]
[ With the sudden switch in Tsukasa's expression, Jun stares back towards his junior, unsure how to respond. It's not unusual to feel beat up after losing a round; however, it almost feels like a fever dream to be witnessing this unfold in real time. The blinking LOSE and WIN screens don't help much, and Jun hastily presses the back button to lesson the blow.
Most of the ASOBI Club loses to one another, usually in good fun with no explicit anger involved, but in ranked games or gachas, Jun experiences the same frustrations. But helping someone out of their frustration is difficult, especially as he watches Tsukasa draw a sweet out of his pocket.
Does he always carry around a supply of sweets? ]
Huh, what's that supposed to mean? It's just a fighting game, Suou-kun?
[ There's a lot to unpack, so Jun will start with the basics. ]
Um, maybe there's a bit of a learning curve, but I dunno how to explain 'em any other way; just that's how they are. But I didn't really think you'd get this frustrated over losing—not saying you're a sore loser! To be honest, losing is fine sometimes; it's not always fun to win all the time.
[ Sure, it can be fun to win, but losing is humbling. ]
And the reason they've all got different skillsets is 'cause it's gonna be boring if every chara plays the same. I dunno, but the developer decides on rules and how combos work, not us players. So that's why you gotta breathe, remember the combos, and not stress too much 'bout it.

why is the chibi icon so funny, jun just innocently watching this breakdown happen
[ If you're being talked to calmly, it becomes almost impossible to remain angry. So Tsukasa's aggressive munching eventually tones down to a more subdued one as he listens to his senior talk. When he swallows the last of the candy, he frowns for a moment as he first gathers his thoughts. Then, in a small voice: ]
It's not... just about the game.
[ Admittedly it feels out of the blue to be opening this up, but he supposes he owes it to his senior to at least attempt to explain where he's coming from. Still, he keeps his gaze on his lap, unable to look at Jun directly. In the meantime, he occupies his hands by smoothing out the leftover candy bar wrapper and folding it as he speaks. ]
Everyone in my class has been really into this game recently. It was Harukawa-kun who introduced it, then it seems Yuta-kun and Shinobu-kun have also been playing it. And as much as it vexes me to say it, apparently even Tori-kun had gotten decent in it as well. They would always have conversations about it during breaks, talking about strategies or new techniques to try out. Admittedly, I do not understand the appeal of it. Isn't a game with a riveting storyline better than something like this? So I thought I could just ignore it and let them be.
But everyone seems to be having so much fun, so I just...
I just wanted to...
[ His cheeks turn pink as he struggles with his sentence, too embarrassed to voice out what he truly wanted to say. Being an only child and having grown up in such a strict household, socialization had always been quite the enigma. Perhaps it was even more apt to say people befriended him rather than him making friends on his own. Yet it doesn't mean he didn't want to try to reach out on his own from time to time. Not that it's been easy, given his own awkwardness.
But he understands what Jun is saying, and truly it dawns on him how immature he must've looked throwing a tantrum like that over a game. Tsukasa shakes his head a bit, then gives Jun a wry smile. He'd also managed to fold his candy bar's wrapper to a much smaller form by now, so he'll just pocket that to properly throw in the trash later. ]
...Thank you for the explanation, Sazanami-senpai. And I apologize as well for showing such an unsightly behavior. I haven't really played much video games growing up, much less this genre, so perhaps it is only my ignorance who's to blame here.

he's seen enough sht to know where it's going (but also helping kasa)
[ Realisation and truth which come after the explanation leave a feeling of instant regret lingering in the air. Jun only assumed the outburst was due to losing the game, not that his junior felt left out or wasn't enjoying himself.
So feelings of inadequacy about not enjoying the same game his friends do—Jun's fully aware of that kind of emotion and how it can build up and wait for you to succumb to it, much the same as Tsukasa's outburst.
He can only speak in a calming tone, attemping to understand the point of view from his junior's perspective. Had this been a different Jun, he would have undoubtedly responded to the outburst with one of his own, but he has become more understanding in the meantime. A pang of unease tightens in his chest, not because he finds the behaviour immature, but considering it feels terrible to feel excluded and knowing this may be the source of it. ]
Ah, so that's the reason why? Just 'cause something's popular with your friends doesn't mean you have to force yourself to enjoy it, too. There's nothing wrong with having that sorta reaction, so maybe fighting games just aren't your thing? You said something 'bout RPG's being pretty fun, which I totally agree with. The story's engaging, and there's a whole world to immerse yourself in, so it's fun to kick back and get lost in that world.
So what I'm tryna say is, just have fun with the games you wanna play. Don't worry 'bout whatever everyone else is playing.
[ But he understands where Tsukasa is coming from, and he's making every effort to be a helpful senior, especially when it comes to those sorts of thoughts. Jun meets his wry smile with a brighter one, nudging him with his knee. ]
Hey, don't worry 'bout it! It's cool with me! And being real honest with you, we're kinda in the same boat. Growing up, my old man never let me play video games, so now we've gotta make up for that lost time, yeah? So, anytime you wanna play, I'm up for it!
But shouldn't one put effort in getting along with their peers? I am well aware that I don't have the same friendly personality the likes of which Yuta-kun or Harukawa-kun can employ so naturally. That's why I thought learning about something that they enjoy and being able to play it with them would be my own way of conveying that I value our friendship... Is that not how it goes?
And yet if I am terrible at the game, I'm afraid they would just find my company bothersome. I also... do not wish to embarrass myself in front of my friends.
[ He'll call it his 'pride as a knight' or something equally grand, but really it's just a normal teenager's fear of being rejected by his peers. At the mention of RPGs though, he does smile a bit. ]
It is true that I do like those kind of games much better. I enjoy reading already, so they almost feel like an extension of that. But that's not really something you play with others, is it?
[ Jun's words bring a sense of comfort at least, and Tsukasa does find himself wishing things were that easy. That he can just choose not to worry. But the thought of potentially alienating himself from his friends if he doesn't do things like this does continue to nag at him. ]
And is that so? You seem to know quite a lot, so I assumed you had been playing them for long. Were you also not allowed to play them because you had to focus on your studies?
[ That's how it is for him, at least. Also, he'll huff his cheeks just a bit at being nudged at. It's nothing bad at all, just that he feels like he's being treated like a kid and he can't help but further be embarrassed about it. ]
Well, yeah, 'course one should! And sure, you don't, but that doesn't mean you're not friendly, Suou-kun. I wouldn't say it's a vice, since you're talking to me just fine. You've got that noble aura around you, but I dunno... It's great to share interests with friends, but it's pretty important to remember not to force yourself into liking them just 'cause it's the new trend.
Ah, that's it? You think they'd judge you for being bad? We've gotta start somewhere, right? Even if you're a newbie, or even if you're not! There's always room to improve, no matter how pro you are.
[ Although Tori seems to be a different story, Jun presumes that Sora and Yuta would never make fun of Tsukasa. He's also realised this is a fact of life; no matter what you do, there will always be a lingering worry about being rejected by those around you. ]
Yeah, those are difficult to play with other people, unless it's a gacha. Something like Gr*nbl*e F*nt*sy, for instance, has both a story and ways to play with people all over the world.
[ Even Jun knows it won't be easy, but he hopes he can dispel even the smallest of Tsukasa's worries. With thousands of games available, it's not always easy to find the perfect match, even if you're eager to join the current popular trend.
Tsukasa's next question catches him off guard, not knowing how to delve into that, he keeps the smile on his face. ]
Aha, I guess you could say that? I just wasn't allowed to keep anything that didn't involve idols lying around the house. Instead, I'd head off to arcades after school, but it was kinda awkward 'cause I never knew anyone there. But Yuuki-san pretty much got me hooked on video games, if you're still wondering why I know so much.
[ It's not entirely a lie! But Makoto's influence definitely helped Jun develop a love of all things gaming, despite Eden using their image and music for one specific video game. ]
I'm guessing our circumstances are pretty different.
Normally I would be happy at being told I carry a noble aura but I presume that it doesn't work in my favor in this context...
[ An embarrassed laugh. Nothing he's particularly offended about, truly. This is par for the course of being a Suou. And while he'd normally take great pride in it, it does feel sad that it creates a barrier of sorts sometimes, especially with friends.
That aside, the word 'newbie' specifically catches his attention, being reminiscent of his earlier days in Knights. Of course being an idol and playing video games are by no means of equal weight. But if Tsukasa was able to work through his own inexperience to become a competent idol, surely he should know better than folding at the mere suggestion of a roadblock. ]
But I understand. Perhaps I am so caught up with wanting to impress my friends that I forget nothing is achieved without putting effort into it. Speaking this way does a disservice to the kindness of my friends as well. In fact, if I only approached them with more honesty, perhaps I wouldn't have made myself this frustrated...
[ Hence he feels lucky he has Jun to listen to him in this regard. To at least get him out of the hole he's inadvertently digging himself in out of stubborness. For now, as if visibly lightened by the conversation, the furrow of his brows relax and he's able to smile with excitement again. ]
Ah, most gacha games nowadays do offer the opportunity to play with friends, don't they? Perhaps that is a good alternative! Although I do not wish to worry my parents about my game spending again...
[ Help he has the money to actually whale hard, don't get him back into this rabbit hole, Jun...
As for the brief look at Jun's childhood, Tsukasa has to admit it's a bit perplexing. Discarding anything that didn't have anything to do with idols... does that mean his senior came from a family steeped in the idol industry? He won't say he's particularly well-versed in idol history to know, but perhaps he'll look up the name 'Sazanami' later. ]
I see. Sazanami-senpai's parents must've been very dedicated to ensuring you become an idol. I imagine it wasn't an easy path. But as you have said earlier, I am glad we now have the opportunity to make up for the lost time! And surely I shouldn't be wasting such a time sulking about a lost video game match.
[ That's why! He picks up the controller again and, with eyes positively sparkling: ]
Shall we have another match, senpai? This time, I only wish to play for fun!
[ Jun is unaware of this; while he is acquainted with numerous eccentric nobility, Tsukasa and Hiyori are practically opposites in every way. A portion of Jun wishes Ohii-san were more noble and less of a pampered princess, but that would have turned his life unbearably mundane, so he may be content with Hiyori as he is.
Still, the thought makes him chuckle and shake his head in response. Jun hopes the words he asserts are appropriate; there remains aspects of Jun who battle between being polite or not within his speech. ]
Don't worry about it too much! I'm not the best with this sorta stuff, but I'm just happy to help out a friend when they need it. Honesty's hard to come by and, well, admit that feeling so freely, so there's no judgement there.
Yeah, for the most part, they do! There's all these open-world gacha's now, though they can be pretty bad for our wallets. Wanting to keep up-to-date with the latest meta's always something we're doing, and really, knowing it'll change with the next patch or unit. Makes sense, especially if you've gotta spark the card or unit each time. Have you done that a lot? For your sake, hope you don't fall back into bad habits.
[ He doesn't really want to think about how much he's spent, but, ah, for now, he'll keep that on the down low. Tsukasa please don't become a whale again! How can someone redo the past ten seconds and go back on those words?
Jun's relieved to see the furrow in Tsukasa's brow soften and notice that something about his demeanour has changed for the better. He's not sure how to be a good senpai to anyone, but he is doing his best to put Tsukasa's fears at ease.
But when his parents are mentioned, his brows quickly furrow, and he hastily masks his reaction. It's probably unwise to probe his relationship with his shitty old man, a failed idol who forced his son into a years-long scheme for revenge. The same parent who tainted the name "Sazanami" and relegated Jun to the status of a Non-Special Student—the same pitiful old man who never demonstrated affection for his son—was the root of Jun's unfortunate circumstances. ]
Goddamn.... My old man's a piece of shit who hardly cared about what I wanted. [ Jun, language!!! ] And that doesn't matter anymore, 'cause we're here now, doing more than pretty well for ourselves.
[ However, Jun smiles as he takes up the controller once more, facing Tsukasa with a grin. ]
I'm game for another match! This time I'll try another character, just so you get the feeling of it.
[ And he does, now selecting the ninja bear type-character, thinking the choice amusing, and as Tsukasa stated, this time was just for fun. ]
imagine walking into the common room and 2 guys are working thru their issues via video games
[ Pause. Was he just called 'friend'? They're friends now? Huh. Huh.
For Tsukasa, roles had always had clear delineations. So while he respects Jun as a senior, he'd never thought it was the sort of relationship that included friendship within it. But now that he thinks about it, they're playing a video game and he's telling said senior things he'd probably hesitate to even tell people he already considers friends. What is that if not an admission of trust, of friendship?
So if he smiles even brighter now, please don't pay too much attention to it! Really, it feels a bit embarrassing to look this happy! He's just pleased to have widened his circle again. Maybe he's not too hopeless on the 'making friends' department after all.
Just... a bit confused by all the gamespeak that follows, however. Meta? Spark? Ahaha, Sazanami-senpai sure knows a lot about this kind of thing. I'm not sure I can keep up... ]
Hmm. In particular, I mostly just bought gear and various special items for my characters to boost their performance in-game. Apparently one is able to obtain those through farming anyway, but the drop rates can be unforgiving and quite honestly I do not wish to go through that when an easier option exists. [ #whaleprivilege please don't perceive him. Anyway, he's much more occupied with leader duties now so perhaps with it comes the maturity to not do that anymore.
And ah, it seems he's hit a sore spot.
That 'Goddamn' and the rant that briefly followed certainly doesn't encourage deeper probing. He can glean that much. Somehow, Jun's words from earlier feels much heavier now: "I'm guessing our circumstances are pretty different." Maybe it is in ways Tsukasa can't even begin to comprehend.
Fortunately, his offer for another match makes it easy to gloss over the topic. He won't even point out the crude language. For now, he just makes a mental note about the topic being sensitive; he'd hate to further upset his friend, after all.
And this time, Tsukasa chooses a character almost the opposite to his previous one: a small, elf-like summoner! So cute, so harmless-looking. ]
This character reminds me of Tori-kun, so I won't feel too bad even if I lost ♪
[ He chuckles darkly to himself like some B-rated movie villain. Why is he like this. Maybe this is his idea of fun. ]
[ Oh, maybe Jun had overstepped and claimed they were friends when they weren't?
Jun's innate ability to remain calm in any situation, even when it may not be appropriate, could be why he finds it so easy to use the word "friends" now. Regardless of the reason, he appreciates being able to have this type of conversation with Tsukasa, regarding this as a genuine manifestation of friendship. Despite being himself, he doesn't sense any judgment from Tsukasa, and he's never had the opportunity to help a junior before! So, he's assumed they have unlocked a new level of friendship after ranking up.
Ah, he seemingly forgets not everyone plays the same games as he does, but he holds his head slightly in shame. Maybe he spends far too much on games, even if they bring enjoyment. (As long as he keeps those records far from Ibara...) ]
Right, so you don't enjoy grinding for the gear? Can't fault you for that, there's loads of people who don't wanna bother, but sounds like it's real easy to fall into that pattern. Doesn't help when a game offers a paid option that's easier, like you said, praying on people who've got money to spend! And it's hard to find time as idols, too.
[ Despite his dissent with the idea, Jun's experiences with MOBAs show they can be addictive for anyone. However, Tsukasa characterises his own as a corporation motivated by greed, intensifying the concern surrounding it. #thegrindneverstops is something Jun sticks by, even if Tsukasa has #whaleprivilege.
Finding solace in the fact Tsukasa doesn't delve too deeply into his rant. The last thing he wants is for his father's actions to overshadow their conversation. Jun understands Tsukasa's unaware of his past, and he doesn't blame him for it. After all, Jun doesn't go around expecting everyone to be familiar with his backstory.
Jun laughs at the mention of Tori, enjoying Tsukasa's enthusiasm for the game. That's difficult to deny the resemblance between the two. ]

I don't mind even if Tori-kun hears it. I'm not scared of him, you know?
[ No one said anything?? Anyway, Round 2 start! He doesn't really attack for now; instead, he seems to be practicing the timing of his dodges. He's doing decent, bar a few stray hits he's taken when his timing is off. ]

What's with this character? I suppose he's much too small to face off the enemy by himself, so he has to rely on a summoned ally? Fufu, I guess your incomprehensible fighting bear has met its match, senpai.

[ Jun can't help but chuckle at that, as he's one of the dedicated gear grinders. He's made it clear that he doesn't mind, so there's no reason for him to mention it! Even though it wasn't on his agenda, Today turned out to be unexpectedly enjoyable as he bonded with Tsukasa.
And the Tori mention brings a smile to his face, but he's relieved he's not the one dealing with the troublesome noble. (Seriously, why does he always end up surrounded by nobles?) As the Round begins, he shifts his focus to the screen, skillfully maneuvering the controller and launching attacks directly at the Tori-lookalike.

It also brings a smile to Jun's face, knowing that this wouldn't be something Tori would appreciate. ]
Yeah, mages in games usually do that! Think it's something 'bout buffing to make their attacks stronger. This kinda character is pretty popular 'cause a lotta people find the summons fun. Alright, I'm not gonna give on easily, so give me everythin' you've got, Suou-kun.
[ Perhaps he shouldn't have shared that information so readily, but experiencing a defeat could humble him a bit, making him realise that he's not an unbeatable gamer.

Anyway, Tsukasa chooses the game's closest approximate to a knight – some armor-wearing, sword-wielding character – because of course he does. ]

But he understands what Jun is saying, and truly it dawns on him how immature he must've looked throwing a tantrum like that over a game. Tsukasa shakes his head a bit, then gives Jun a wry smile. Had this been a different Jun, he would have undoubtedly responded to the outburst with one of his own, but he has become more understanding in the meantime. But when his parents are mentioned, his brows quickly furrow, and he hastily masks his reaction. It's probably unwise to probe his relationship with his shitty old man, a failed idol who forced his son into a years-long scheme for revenge. Fortunately, his offer for another match makes it easy to gloss over the topic. He won't even point out the crude language. For now, he just makes a mental note about the topic being sensitive; he'd hate to further upset his friend, after all.

Yep, that's one way to look at it! It's short like him, anyway. I'm sure he wouldn't wanna hear that...
[ Somewhere Tori's sneezing, hopefully he never finds out why. ]
that's just this entire franchise in general really
Right, right? Although I understand there is a sense of fulfillment to be had through grinding, so I don't fault people who put time into it. To be honest, I do feel just a bit jealous sometimes when I hear someone who, despite all the odds, managed to get the item I merely took the easy way to obtain.
[ The grass is always greener on the other side and all that. Also, that concern for Tori will be met with a small chuckle.
Hmm. Perfectly dodging incoming attacks is necessary to maintain survivability, but then it only prolongs the battle which the timer discourages. Perhaps in these sort of games, taking the offensive truly is the best way to secure vict–
[ Oops, he's doing it again. ]
–ah, my apologies. I'm thinking too much about winning again, aren't I? To have fun is let things take its course, or at least that is what I'm aiming at for now.
[ But enough dodging Jun's attacks; it's his turn to counter! Though he's not really sure what this character does, really, since he mostly just chose it to poke fun at Tori. He presses the attack button and it prompts his character to throw some scroll to the air and... poof! out of it comes a reptile-like monster. That gets a laugh out of Tsukasa. ]
What's with this character? I suppose he's much too small to face off the enemy by himself, so he has to rely on a summoned ally? Fufu, I guess your incomprehensible fighting bear has met its match, senpai.
it really is!!! especially with how the event climaxes are going
He's not aiming for victory, just enjoying a friendly match together. ]
I'd say you're not wrong! Loadsa people play games that way, don't they? I don't mind if that's your goal.
[ He mentions with a grin that he's not too concerned about Tsukasa discussing strategies to win. Jun usually doesn't play this type of character, either, but he's having a lot of fun trying something new. And he didn't anticipate Tsukasa's character to behave in such a way!
Although he's no strategic expert, his fingers move swiftly over the controller, pushing buttons as the bear-ninja performs a jutsu to summon a toad and proceeds to shoot a fire attack at Tsukasa's character.
(What a complete Naruto ripoff.)]
